L-Club: St Marys Port Glasgow After-School Club

3. L-Club is a weekly after-school club for children 6-12 years including children with disabilities and special needs. Run by church members and volunteers, it links with Port Glasgow High School Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as community service for the youths enrolled in the scheme. We are one of 3 churches running an after-school club in Port Glasgow but offering different days means we spread the provision. The pattern is same each week with open play, a choice of games, table tennis, soccer table, badminton, a quiet corner with cushions and books for less boisterous children, organised team games, story time, craft time and refreshments. All the volunteers have Disclosure Scotland Clearance and children have to be collected by an adult known to the child and volunteers). We address community needs such : after school care of primary aged children, need for non-formal education, social isolation in the case of disabled children or those with additional learning needs, spiritual and religious education..
